Gregory the Great reorganized church lands and finances, fed the poor of Rome, and stepped in to govern the city when imperial power failed. He sent Augustine of Canterbury to convert the Anglo-Saxons of England in 597. He called himself the servant of the servants of God, a title popes still use, and his writings on pastoral care guided bishops for centuries. His name is attached to Gregorian chant.
