Gregory II defied the Byzantine emperor Leo III over iconoclasm, the emperor's ban on religious images, and refused to enforce it in the West. This split pushed Rome further from Constantinople. He commissioned Boniface to preach to the pagan Germans, which spread Latin Christianity across central Europe.
