Manly Palmer Hall was a largely self-taught scholar who, at twenty-seven, published The Secret Teachings of All Ages, a lavish encyclopedia of Western esoteric symbolism. In 1934 he founded the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles as a center for the study of the world's wisdom traditions. He became a Freemason and was later given the honorary 33rd degree, and he lectured and wrote prolifically on the perennial philosophy for six decades.
