Stephen II crossed the Alps to seek Frankish help against the Lombards, the first pope to travel north for a king. Pepin the Short defeated the Lombards and handed the conquered territory to the pope in the Donation of Pepin. That gift created the Papal States, land the popes ruled as their own kingdom for the next eleven centuries.
