Nicholas I pressed the claim that the pope stood above all bishops and even kings in matters of faith and morals. He forced the Frankish king Lothair II to take back a wife he had cast aside, and he clashed with Patriarch Photius of Constantinople in a dispute that foreshadowed the later East-West split. He is one of the few medieval popes called the Great.
