Robert Boyle
1627 – 1691 Anglo-Irish chemist, physicist
The father of modern chemistry, who separated it from alchemy.

Boyle argued that matter is made of particles and insisted chemistry rest on experiment, breaking it from alchemy. Boyle's law, relating a gas's pressure and volume, still bears his name. He was a leading light of the early Royal Society.
