Paschal II carried on Gregory VII's fight over investiture with the German emperors. He once agreed to let the Church give up its worldly wealth in exchange for the emperor giving up the right to appoint bishops, but the bishops rejected the deal and it collapsed. Emperor Henry V seized him and forced concessions, which Paschal later revoked. The long quarrel he inherited was finally settled after his death in the Concordat of Worms.
