A Lutheran with a private, deeply held but unorthodox faith; he rarely discussed religion openly.
Affiliations
Director of the Gottingen observatory. No secret society.

Gauss made landmark advances in number theory, statistics, geometry, and astronomy, often years before others published the same ideas. The normal distribution and the unit of magnetism bear his name. He is ranked among the greatest mathematicians who ever lived.
