Clement V, a Frenchman, never went to Rome and settled the papal court at Avignon in France, starting the seventy-year period later called the Babylonian Captivity of the papacy. Under heavy pressure from King Philip IV, he suppressed the Knights Templar in 1312 and let their leaders be burned. He was widely seen as a tool of the French crown.
