Balbo was one of the organizers of the March on Rome and became famous for leading long-distance formation flights that showcased Italian aviation. As governor of Libya he pursued colonization and infrastructure while the regime waged brutal pacification. He was killed in 1940 when his plane was shot down by Italian anti-aircraft fire over Tobruk.
