The papacy

Nicholas V brought the Renaissance to the papacy. A scholar and book collector, he founded the Vatican Library and paid humanists to hunt down and translate ancient Greek and Latin texts. He planned a grand rebuilding of Rome and St. Peter's. He lived to see the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans in 1453 and called in vain for a crusade to answer it.
