Ho founded the Vietnamese Communist movement, led the fight against French colonial rule and became the first president of North Vietnam. He was the enduring symbol of the struggle that continued through the Vietnam War. After his death in 1969 the state embalmed him and built a mausoleum cult around 'Uncle Ho.'
