Guevara was a leader of the Cuban Revolution who then tried to export guerrilla insurgency to Africa and Latin America. He held senior posts in Cuba and oversaw revolutionary tribunals before leaving to fight abroad. Captured and executed in Bolivia in 1967, he became an enduring, heavily mythologized symbol of rebellion.
