Josip Broz Tito led the communist partisans in wartime Yugoslavia and ruled the federation from 1945 until his death in 1980. He broke with the Soviet Union in 1948 and steered an independent socialist course. With Nehru, Nasser, and Sukarno he co-founded the Non-Aligned Movement, giving smaller nations a bloc between the superpowers.
