Walter Ulbricht

First Communist leader of East Germany and builder of the Berlin Wall.

Ulbricht led East Germany through its founding and Sovietization, crushing the 1953 uprising with Soviet tanks. In 1961 he ordered the construction of the Berlin Wall to stop the flight of citizens westward. He was gradually sidelined by Honecker and Moscow before his death in 1973.
