Nicholas I began his reign by crushing the Decembrist uprising and ruled as a strict autocrat for thirty years. His government promoted the doctrine of Orthodoxy, Autocracy, and Nationality and policed dissent closely. Russia's defeat in the Crimean War exposed the empire's backwardness by the time of his death.
