Julius II, called the warrior pope, personally led armies in armor to win back and expand the Papal States. He was one of the greatest art patrons in history, laying the first stone of the new St. Peter's Basilica and hiring Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and Raphael to decorate his rooms. His drive and temper made the papacy a leading political and cultural power of the High Renaissance.
