Adrian VI, a Dutchman and former tutor of Emperor Charles V, was a serious reformer who admitted openly that corruption reached the papal court itself. He tried to clean up abuses and answer the Protestant challenge, but his short reign and his outsider status left Rome hostile to him. He was the last non-Italian pope until John Paul II in 1978.
