Austere reforming pope who standardized the Mass and organized the victory at Lepanto.

Pius V, a Dominican friar, put the reforms of the Council of Trent into force. He issued the Roman Missal that fixed the Latin Mass used across the Church for the next four hundred years, and a new catechism and breviary. He excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1570. He built the Holy League whose fleet crushed the Ottoman navy at Lepanto in 1571. He was later declared a saint.
