Gregory XIII reformed the calendar in 1582 to correct the drift of the older Julian system, dropping ten days that October. The Gregorian calendar he introduced is the civil calendar used around the world today. He was a strong backer of the Jesuits and their new colleges, and he founded seminaries across Europe to train Counter-Reformation clergy.
