Innocent XI cleaned up papal finances and fought corruption and nepotism at a court used to lavish living. He funded and pushed the alliance that broke the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, a turning point that stopped the Turkish advance into central Europe. He resisted the claims of King Louis XIV of France to control the French church. He was later beatified.
