Pius VII rebuilt the Church after the Revolution, signing the Concordat of 1801 with Napoleon that restored Catholic worship in France. He traveled to Paris for Napoleon's coronation in 1804, but Napoleon crowned himself. When the pope refused to join his war measures, Napoleon annexed the Papal States and held Pius prisoner from 1809 to 1814. Pius outlived Napoleon's empire and returned to Rome in triumph.
