Andrew Carnegie

1835 – 1919 American steel magnate, philanthropist

Scottish-born steel magnate who became one of history's great philanthropists.

Presbyterian upbringing; later agnostic.
Affiliations
Founded Carnegie Steel, sold to form U.S. Steel; funded thousands of libraries, Carnegie Hall and the Carnegie endowments.

A poor immigrant from Dunfermline, he built Carnegie Steel into the world's largest steel producer and sold it to J. P. Morgan in 1901 to form U.S. Steel. He then gave away most of his fortune, funding libraries, universities and peace endowments under the creed of his 'Gospel of Wealth'.
