He was born Gustav von Bohlen und Halbach; when he married the Krupp heiress Bertha Krupp in 1906, Kaiser Wilhelm II authorised him to add the Krupp name. He ran the armaments empire that rearmed Germany under the Nazis, though ill health spared him a Nuremberg trial.
