A member of the banking family, he was sent to Budapest in 1944 and issued Swedish protective passes and set up safe houses that saved tens of thousands of Jews from the Holocaust. He was seized by Soviet forces in 1945 and his fate remains officially unresolved; he was long presumed to have died in captivity.
