India's only female prime minister and the dominant figure of the dynasty's second generation.

Born Indira Nehru, she took the surname Gandhi through her marriage to Feroze Gandhi, who was no relation to Mahatma Gandhi. She led India for most of two decades, won the 1971 war against Pakistan, imposed an authoritarian Emergency, and was assassinated by her own bodyguards in 1984.
