Benedict XV became pope just as the First World War broke out. He kept the Church neutral and worked to relieve suffering, calling the war a useless slaughter and offering a seven-point peace plan in 1917 that both sides ignored. He organized aid for prisoners and refugees and helped reunite families separated by the fighting. His diplomacy raised the papacy's moral standing even as its political power stayed small.
