Alexandre Lamfalussy was a Hungarian-born Belgian economist who served as general manager of the BIS from 1985 to 1993. He was a leading thinker on financial stability and international capital markets. He went on to become the first president of the European Monetary Institute, the forerunner of the European Central Bank.
