Gary Webb was an investigative reporter for the San Jose Mercury News whose 1996 'Dark Alliance' series argued that cocaine sales tied to the Nicaraguan Contras fueled the crack epidemic in American cities. His reporting was heavily criticized by major newspapers, and he left the paper. A later CIA inspector general report acknowledged the agency had worked with traffickers.
