Quintilian taught rhetoric in Rome and was among the first to hold a state salaried teaching chair under the emperor Vespasian. His twelve book Institutio Oratoria laid out a graded course of education from early childhood through advanced rhetoric and stressed kindness over corporal punishment. The work was widely read by Renaissance humanists and shaped later ideas of the well rounded student.
