Hypatia led the Neoplatonist school in Alexandria, teaching mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy to students who came from across the Mediterranean. She edited and commented on major mathematical texts and was widely respected as a public teacher. She was killed by a mob in 415 amid the city's religious conflicts and later became a symbol of learning and free inquiry.
