Comenius argued for universal education of all children, boys and girls and rich and poor, in his Didactica Magna. He promoted teaching in the mother tongue, learning through the senses, and moving from the simple to the complex. His illustrated textbook Orbis Pictus was one of the first picture books for children and was used across Europe for two centuries.
