Noah Webster wrote the American Spelling Book, known as the blue backed speller, which sold in the tens of millions and shaped early American literacy. He wanted a distinctly American education and spelling, and simplified many British spellings still used in the United States today. His American Dictionary of the English Language appeared in 1828 after decades of work.
