As headmaster of Rugby School from 1828, Thomas Arnold made character and Christian moral training central to English boarding school education. He strengthened the role of senior pupils as prefects and broadened the curriculum beyond the classics. His model influenced public schools across Britain and was popularized in the novel Tom Brown's School Days.
