Francis Parker reformed the schools of Quincy, Massachusetts, in the 1870s, replacing rote drill with lessons rooted in children's interests and real experience. He later led teacher training in Chicago, where his ideas influenced the young John Dewey. Dewey called him the father of progressive education in America.
