Maria Montessori was one of Italy's first woman physicians and turned to education through her work with children. In 1907 she opened the first Casa dei Bambini in Rome, where she developed a method built on prepared environments, self directed activity, and specially designed materials. Montessori schools spread across the world and remain widely used today.
