Anton Makarenko developed a method of education through the collective while running colonies for homeless and delinquent youth after the Russian Revolution. He combined productive work, self government, and group responsibility to reshape troubled young people into contributing members of society. His account of the work, The Road to Life, made him one of the most influential Soviet educators.
