Mohammad Reza Pahlavi ruled Iran as Shah from 1941 until 1979. His power was consolidated after the 1953 coup that removed Mossadegh, and his reign leaned heavily on US and British support and the SAVAK secret police. Growing repression and inequality fed the 1979 revolution that forced him into exile, where he died the following year.
