Francis, born Jorge Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, was the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit. He took his name from Francis of Assisi and pressed for a poorer, humbler Church focused on the marginalized, asking of gay people, Who am I to judge? His encyclical Laudato Si in 2015 made care for the environment a moral duty. He softened the Church's tone on many issues while holding its core teaching, and he worked to confront the abuse crisis. He died in 2025.
