Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, is the first pope from the United States. An Augustinian friar, he spent much of his career as a missionary and bishop in Peru before leading his order and then a key Vatican office under Francis. Elected in May 2025, he chose the name Leo in a nod to Leo XIII and the Church's social teaching on work and justice in a new age of technology.
