Antonio Gramsci

1891 – 1937 Italian philosopher, Marxist theorist, politician

Italian Marxist thinker who developed the theory of cultural hegemony while imprisoned by the Fascists.

Religion
Marxist and atheist.
Affiliations
Italian Communist Party, which he helped found and led until his arrest.

Antonio Gramsci co-founded the Italian Communist Party and was jailed by Mussolini's regime in 1926. In his Prison Notebooks he argued that the ruling class holds power as much through cultural hegemony, its worldview accepted as common sense, as through force, and that change requires a long war of position within a society's institutions. His ideas became central to later Marxist and cultural theory, and were later distorted by the cultural Marxism conspiracy theory.
