Martin Luther King Jr. led the nonviolent American civil rights movement from the Montgomery bus boycott through the March on Washington, where he gave the 'I Have a Dream' speech, to the passage of the Civil Rights and Fair Housing Acts. He was surveilled and harassed by the FBI under COINTELPRO. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968.
