W. T. Stead invented much of modern investigative journalism as editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, and was for a time Cecil Rhodes's chosen partner in the plan for a secret society to promote British unity and world influence. A campaigner and spiritualist, he died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
