Bayezid I, nicknamed the Thunderbolt, expanded Ottoman power in the Balkans and Anatolia and defeated a European crusade at Nicopolis in 1396. He was defeated and captured by Timur at the Battle of Ankara in 1402 and died in captivity. His fall triggered a civil war known as the Ottoman Interregnum.
