Mehmed II, called the Conqueror, took Constantinople in 1453 and made it his capital, ending the Byzantine Empire. He reshaped the city, issued new law codes, and extended Ottoman rule across the Balkans and Anatolia. He presented himself as heir to both Islamic and Roman imperial traditions.
