Selim I, known as the Grim, defeated the Safavids at Chaldiran and conquered the Mamluk Sultanate, adding Egypt, Syria, and the Hejaz. These conquests gave the Ottomans control of the Muslim holy cities and, by later tradition, the title of caliph. His short reign roughly doubled the size of the empire.
