Theodora rose from a low-status background to become empress alongside Justinian I and one of his most trusted advisers. She is credited by the historian Procopius with steadying the throne during the Nika riots of 532. She backed legal measures affecting women and, unlike her husband, tended to support the Miaphysite side of church disputes.
