Belisarius was Justinian I's most celebrated commander, defeating the Vandals in North Africa and the Ostrogoths in Italy. He helped suppress the Nika riots and campaigned against the Sassanid Persians in the east. Much of what is known of him comes from the historian Procopius, who served on his staff.
