Heraclius overthrew Phocas and reorganized a hard-pressed empire, then won a long war against Sassanid Persia and recovered the True Cross. Soon after, the early Muslim conquests took Syria, Egypt, and other rich provinces. He is often credited with making Greek the empire's official language.
