Alexios I seized the throne during a period of crisis and rebuilt Byzantine finances, army, and diplomacy. His appeal to the West for mercenaries helped set off the First Crusade, which he then had to manage as crusader armies passed through his lands. His reign is chronicled by his daughter Anna Komnene in the Alexiad.
